“Bad guy turns good,” sounds like a movie title. But it’s also the story of the patron saint of this church, Parroquia San Pedro Armengol.

Back in 1942, June 21 to be exact, Archbishop Juan Pascual Chimento of La Plata decided to create this parish. Before this role, he was the bishop of Mercedes. The friars of the Order of the Merced founded Parroquia San Pedro Armengol. Don Luis Lado Vidal and others secured a property. It was on Avenida Pavón now Hipólito Yrigoyen at 2700.
Interestingly, the property had a past. A “cafetín” stood there previously. It was a gathering spot for unsavory characters. This history connects to the church’s patron saint. San Pedro Armengol was a 13th-century figure. Before joining the Order of the Merced, he led a band of robbers. They roamed the roads of Aragon and Barcelona. Quite the transformation, right?
Initially, masses were held in a small nearby hall. Every Sunday, Mercedarian fathers traveled from Ranelagh. That’s where the Order’s postulant house was located. Meanwhile, the first church was being built. Over time, it became too small. A new, larger church with modern lines replaced it. Inside the new church, a beautiful image of the Virgen de la Merced stands at the altar. This Marian devotion significantly influenced General Manuel Belgrano and Argentine history.
For 64 years, the Mercedarian fathers served here. However, in December 2005, they transferred care of the parish. The Diocese of Avellaneda-Lanús took over due to a shortage of priests.
Today, Parroquia San Pedro Armengol continues its mission. It stands on the border between Avellaneda and Lanús. It serves a large community. The church also actively engages online, and you can find them on Facebook and Instagram.
During the 75th anniversary celebration, Bishop Rubén Oscar Frassia spoke. He emphasized the importance of remembering the past. He noted the contributions of many people over the years. He encouraged the community to be open and welcoming. He urged them to seek out those who do not attend church. Bishop Frassia also asked for San Pedro Armengol’s intercession.
