Picture this a humble chapel nestled in a region of orchards. This was the seed from which Parroquia San Antonio de Padua blossomed. It was a small beginning a place of worship for a small community. Yet it held a profound significance. The devotion of the people to Saint Anthony created an atmosphere of faith and hope. That tiny chapel the precursor to the magnificent Parroquia San Antonio de Padua you see before you today was the heart of the community.
The Parroquia San Antonio de Padua’s official birth was January 1 1907. Archbishop Mariano Antonio Espinosa formally established the parish. This wasn’t just the creation of a church it was the establishment of a spiritual home for a growing neighborhood. The original worship space was part of the Casa Parroquial. The left side rooms were transformed into a small place of worship. Remarkably a marble altarpiece from that tiny chapel still exists today. It now resides in the atrium a testament to the parish’s enduring history.
Father Fernando M Pearson the first parish priest played a pivotal role in the growth of Parroquia San Antonio de Padua. He built a spacious shed. This larger space provided much needed comfort for the parishioners. His dedication is a symbol of unwavering faith. Father Sebastian Monteverde who succeeded him poured nine years of hard work into the community. He further developed the church adding to what already existed. His dedication strengthened the bond between the community and their patron saint.
However a larger church was needed. Father Dr Pedro Luis Labenne the third priest realized the limitations of the shed. He envisioned a grander structure. He designed the plans for a new church. On June 13 1923 the cornerstone for the present Parroquia San Antonio de Padua was laid. This wasn’t a project solely funded by the wealthy. The church is a testament to the generosity of ordinary people. Their contributions were so significant that 51 bound books list every donor. These volumes stand as a testament to communal faith and devotion.
The style is remarkable. The church is in the Neoromanesque style. It measures approximately 50 meters by 14 meters. The front features a bell tower housing three bells and a clock. The interior is stunning. Ornate marble work adorns the building. Fine bas-reliefs of Saint Michael the Archangel and the Guardian Angel flank the main entrance. Inside you’ll find beautiful marble niches dedicated to Saint Anthony and the Holy Christ. The detail of the marble work is breathtaking.
