The imposing brick facade of Parroquia San Alfonso stands before you. Its simple yet elegant design belies a rich history. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to faith community and the unwavering spirit of Parque Chas.
Parroquia San Alfonso began its life not as a grand church but as a small chapel. In 1932 Monseñor Fortunato Devoto laid the cornerstone. It was initially dedicated to La Purísima and San Ignacio de Loyola. Two years later in 1934 it was officially designated a parish although it didn’t fully function as one immediately.
The Jesuits initially oversaw the chapel. However by the end of 1939 they withdrew. The Redemptorist Fathers stepped in. They took on the responsibility of Sunday masses and holy day services.
A pivotal moment arrived on January 31 1940. Father Emilio Viscontini became the first superior of the parish. Then on September 21 of the same year Cardinal Copello blessed the Casa de Ejercicios Spirituales. He also blessed the Parroquia San Alfonso. Despite the rain a large crowd attended. The municipality even joined the celebrations. They decorated the church and surrounding streets with flags and lights.
The Parroquia San Alfonso wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a vibrant community hub. In 1942 the Federico Grotte Catholic Workers’ Circles were founded within its walls. Expansion works took place in 1944. These were blessed on June 11 of the same year.
Artist Cirilo Katkor was commissioned to decorate the interior in 1947. Three magnificent bells were added in 1950. Their resonant tones still call the faithful to worship. Each bell has a special dedication. One is to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Another to Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The third bell is dedicated to San Alfonso himself.
Cardinal Luis Santiago Copello was the driving force behind Parroquia San Alfonso and the Casa de Ejercicios. He declared them the official center for spiritual exercises for the archdiocesan clergy. Various branches of Catholic Action Catholic Workers’ Circles and other Catholic institutions used the space.
Parroquia San Alfonso’s story is one of perseverance growth and community. The church stands as a symbol of faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Parque Chas.
