The Parroquia Nuestra Sra. del Milagro is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living monument to a miraculous event. In the 17th century a cart carrying an image of the Immaculate Conception inexplicably stopped in Zelaya. The other image made it to its destination. This smaller clay image however refused to move. People interpreted this as a sign from the Virgin Mary herself.
This humble image became the heart of a growing devotion. The story tells of Manuel a small slave who witnessed the miracle. He dedicated his life to caring for the image. He kept the humble chapel orderly and tended the Virgin’s garments. He guided pilgrims in their prayers. He remained devoted even after the original owner’s death. Later Ana de Matos tried to take the image to her own estate. But the next morning the image was back in Zelaya. This happened repeatedly.
The event became so well-known the bishop and governor authorized its relocation. Eventually a larger chapel was built to accommodate pilgrims. This is the Parroquia Nuestra Sra. del Milagro you see today. It wasn’t constructed until 1979. Fray Gabriel Marullo oversaw its creation. The inauguration took place on May 9 1981.
