Pause for a moment and picture the year 1902. The inhabitants of Buenos Aires are requesting permission to build a church. This is the story of Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazon.

Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazon is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is under the invocation of the Sacred Heart. The church is also known as Iglesia de Buenos Aires. Its history traces back to 1902. The inhabitants wanted to build a temple. They affirmed they had land donated for the church. Archbishop Joaquín Pardo Vergara granted permission in September 1902.

Later that year Archbishop Vergara blessed the first stone. This marked the beginning of construction. Francisco Nevechi designed the church. Mercedes Saldarriaga de Botero donated the land. Father Sabino Giraldo was first in charge of construction. Father Luis Gaviria later took charge. He oversaw the project until completion.

Finally on August 12 1931 Archbishop Manuel José Caycedo Martínez inaugurated the church. He blessed the new Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazon.

Step inside Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazon. You will find a beautiful interior. It features white and green colors with gold trim. The church has wooden pews. It only has one longitudinal nave. A transverse nave crosses it. This forms the arms of a cross. Several simple stained-glass windows are throughout the church. Many pieces of religious artwork are on display. Like many churches there are confessionals on both sides. An organ arrived in 1950. It sits on the second floor.

Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazon stands as a testament to faith and community. Its neo-Gothic style is worth noting. It is a beautiful church with a rich history. It continues to serve as a place of worship. It is a place of solace for the people of Buenos Aires. The church is located along Calle Ayacucho. The tram runs here. It is between the Buenos Aires and Bicentenario stations.

Mass schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 7 am, 8 am and 7 pm. Tuesday at 7 am, 8 am, 4 pm and 6 pm. Saturday at 7 am, 8 am, noon, 5 pm and 7 pm. Sunday at 7 am, 8 am, 11 am, noon, 5 pm, 6 pm, 7 pm and 8 pm.
