Doesn’t the name Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Líbano just roll off the tongue? This Maronite Catholic parish church stands in the Sayago neighborhood of Montevideo. It is a testament to the Lebanese community’s enduring faith and heritage in Uruguay.

Let’s step back in time. The late 19th century saw the first Lebanese immigrants arrive in Uruguay. By 1888 they were seeking spiritual guidance in their own rite. They petitioned the Bishop of Montevideo for a Maronite priest. These early requests laid the foundation for what would become Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Líbano.

The Maronite Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary arrived in Montevideo in 1924. This marked a turning point. The order established a permanent presence. On November 30 1941 their parish was officially established. The church became a focal point for the growing Lebanese community.

The present temple was built between 1984 and 1986. Eladio Dieste designed it. It stands as a proud symbol dedicated to Our Lady of Lebanon. But the story doesn’t end with the building’s completion.

Before this grand structure the community first built a chapel dedicated to Santa Teresa. It still stands within the Centro Educativo Líbano today. This educational institution operates alongside the parish. It provides religious formation and sacraments to nearly 200 students.

Interestingly Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Líbano holds a unique distinction. It is the only bi-ritual parish in Uruguay. Here the Eucharist and other sacraments are celebrated in both the Roman and Maronite rites. This reflects the diverse spiritual needs of its congregation.

The church’s commitment extends beyond spiritual practices. A vibrant parish life caters to all ages. From Christian initiation for young children to missionary groups for adults the church offers many activities. The “Vicentinos” collect food and clothing for those in need. A testament to their dedication to the community.

The church is also one of the highest points in Montevideo. Behind the temple, a statue of the Virgin Mary stands atop a tall column. Only the Cerro and the Santuario Nacional del Cerrito de la Victoria stand higher.

Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Líbano is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith community and cultural heritage. It embodies the spirit of the Lebanese people in Uruguay. It also shows their enduring connection to their homeland. A visit here offers a glimpse into a rich history. It also shows a vibrant present.
