Have you ever felt the weight of history whisper secrets in the stones? Standing before the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Lourdes you can almost hear it. This beautiful church in Montevideo’s Malvín neighborhood is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and architectural ambition.
The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Lourdes was established on February 4 1934 by Archbishop Juan Francisco Aragone. He dedicated it to Our Lady of Lourdes a significant religious figure. The original structure however was far smaller than what you see today. By the 1960s a new grander church was envisioned.
The renowned engineer Eladio Dieste was chosen to design this ambitious project. Dieste was a master of innovative structural designs often utilizing economical yet stunning techniques. His vision for the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Lourdes was breathtaking. He planned a unique structure incorporating his signature style of thin-shell concrete vaults.
Unfortunately this grand vision remained largely unrealized. Financial constraints brought construction to a halt. Only part of the presbytery tower designed by Dieste was completed reaching a height of 27 meters. This incomplete tower stands as a poignant reminder of unfulfilled potential. It’s a striking incomplete monument to ambition.
Yet even in its unfinished state the tower is an architectural marvel. Its design is a harmonious blend of geometric shapes. Dieste described it as a ruled surface formed by a cone and a series of conoids. The construction itself was ingenious. Workers built the walls without scaffolding using simple guides and a clever system of temporary supports.
Interestingly a church remarkably similar to Dieste’s uncompleted design was eventually built. Between 1996 and 1998 a church incorporating Dieste’s plans was constructed in Alcalá de Henares Spain. It serves as a kind of echo of what might have been here in Montevideo.
The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Lourdes today is a blend of old and new. The original church still stands. It’s connected to the incomplete Dieste tower and the newly reformed parish house. The parish house also displays Dieste’s innovative building style. It features double walls and vaulted ceilings made from locally sourced materials.
The image of the Virgin of Lourdes presides over the altar a constant reminder of faith and devotion. The church remains a vibrant part of the Malvín community.
