A simple rancho it began. This is the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Aránzazu. More than two centuries ago Father San Ginés built a humble chapel here. It served as both home and makeshift church. Imagine the scene a simple structure nestled in the Alto de Punta Gorda.
The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Aránzazu stands before you today a testament to faith and perseverance. It’s more than just a beautiful building. It’s the heart of San Fernando. Its story is interwoven with the very fabric of this town.
Construction of a proper church began in 1806. Viceroy Rafael de Sobremonte himself laid the cornerstone. The original structure was plain rectangular. A simple camposanto lay behind it. This humble church marked not only a spiritual center but the founding of San Fernando de la Buena Vista. The name San Fernando honors the Prince of Asturias. Legend says Sobremonte’s exclamation “Que buena vista!” gave the town its full name.
In 1862 a significant upgrade was planned. Father Bernardo Repetto envisioned a grander church. Engineer Juan Martorell drew up the neoclassical plans. The new church boasted two towers. A portico with four columns and an atrium completed the impressive design. Inside elaborate altarpieces and images adorned the space. Most prominent was the image of the Virgin of Aranzazu. She is flanked by Saint Louis of France and Saint Ferdinand of Castile.
The church you see today underwent a transformation. The original facade was demolished and replaced in the early 20th century. The new design is taller and more eclectic blending Gothic Romanesque and Arabic styles. The towers reach 35 meters high. One tower the south tower houses the bell tower. It contains two bronze bells cast in 1901.
The interior retains its original features. Twelve columns support the three naves. The vaulted ceiling is 15 meters high. A French pipe organ from 1908 sits in the loft. Six stained-glass rose windows bathe the space in light. The main altarpiece a masterpiece of woodcarving remains dedicated to the Virgin of Aranzazu. It’s a captivating mix of old and new faith and history architecture and art. The Parroquia Nuestra Señora de Aránzazu stands as a symbol of enduring devotion. A place where faith continues to inspire and unite.
