“A church built by carpenters, for carpenters.” That’s how the story of the Parroquia de la Santa Cruz y Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, or simply La Soledad, begins. We stand at the edge of Barrio La Merced in Mexico City, before this impressive structure that has witnessed centuries of history. The Parroquia de la Santa Cruz stands as a testament to the dedication of the Coltzingo community, once known for its skilled woodworkers. Local lore tells us that this dedication to Santa Cruz, the Holy Cross, is a nod to the neighborhood’s history. The church also houses a revered image of the Virgin of Solitude, giving it its common name, La Soledad. The current Parroquia de la Santa Cruz isn’t the first structure to grace this spot. The original parish was established in 1633 as an “Indian parish.” A hermitage was consecrated in 1731. The present church, constructed between 1774 and 1787, embodies the Neo-classical style that was emerging in New Spain. Although enlarged in the late 18th century and meticulously restored in 1982, its essential appearance remains unchanged. The gray sandstone facade of the Parroquia de la Santa Cruz is a study in Neo-classical design. Look closely at the figures adorning the facade: they depict symbolic elements of the Passion of Christ. John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene are positioned on the lower level. Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea stand watch above. And between them, on the second level, you’ll find a carved image of the Virgin of Solitude. Step inside the Parroquia de la Santa Cruz, and you’ll be greeted by a rectangular interior with three naves. Six sculpted Neoclassical columns support the main nave. Arches support other sections of the building. The ceiling, a masterpiece of barrel vaults and lunettes, draws the eye upwards to the octagonal dome. The choir area, expansive and supported by three arches, extends over the three naves. Within the wooden tabernacle area, you’ll find the revered image of the Virgin of Solitude. Notice the marble altar, installed in 1903 to harmonize with the pulpit and choir balustrade. Much of the wood furnishings date back to the 19th century. The Parroquia de la Santa Cruz also houses extensive historical archives, with some documents dating back to the parish’s founding in 1633. Beyond its architectural and historical significance, the Parroquia de la Santa Cruz serves as a vital community hub, offering meals and services to those in need, often filling the plaza out front. And just north of the plaza, you might catch a glimpse of intercity buses heading south, a reminder of the Parroquia de la Santa Cruz’s place in the bustling heart of Mexico City.
