Intended as a temporary oratory by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, it was entrusted to the Sons of the Holy Family Congregation. The neighborhood, then known as El Bajo de Chiclana, had a reputation for its radical inhabitants, harboring communist and anarchist centers. The benefactor, Rodolfo Scapino, envisioned a spiritual haven amidst this ideological fervor. He even vouched for the landlord, describing him as “a Spanish gentleman of very good sentiments.” Little did they know, this “gentleman” seemed to have misconstrued the agreement, believing the lease was only for a year. This misunderstanding, however, became a divine opportunity. The Sons of the Holy Family, embracing the unexpected turn of events, purchased the land. Then they embarked on a journey of expansion. On January 4, 1931, the small oratory was blessed. Just a few months later, it was officially declared Parroquia Jesús de Nazaret. The initial modest structure, measuring a mere eight by seven meters, soon proved inadequate for the growing congregation. By 1933, a new, larger “tin church,” as locals dubbed it, arose nearby. The original site became home to a four-story building housing the residence, seminary, and congregation headquarters. Parroquia Jesús de Nazaret continued to flourish, celebrating its silver anniversary in 1956 with much fanfare. This included the inauguration of a free clinic named “Nazaret.” This demonstrated the parish’s commitment to serving the community’s physical as well as spiritual needs. Yet, the journey didn’t end there. A third, more modern structure was built in 1966. This structure showcased a stunning triptych of the Holy Family by Catalan painter Pablo Macià. Finally, in 1987, the current, awe-inspiring edifice at the corner of Avenida La Plata and Teniente Coronel Gregorio Pomar was consecrated. This architectural marvel, inspired by a namesake parish in Madrid, stands as a beacon of faith, a symbol of the enduring spirit of Parroquia Jesús de Nazaret. Today, Parroquia Jesús de Nazaret continues to serve as a vital hub for the community. It houses Caritas, Scouts, Vincentians, and other groups within its adjacent buildings.
