Could a church defy a city’s relentless progress? The Parroquia Inmaculado Corazón de María stands as a testament to such defiance. This neo-Gothic marvel graces Plaza Constitución’s northern edge. Its story is one of resilience and unwavering faith. The Parroquia Inmaculado Corazón de María began with a generous donation in 1905. Doña Julia Merchante gifted land, stipulating that the Claretian missionaries build a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Mary. The order settled in on August 14th. However, the church’s journey was just beginning. The cornerstone wasn’t laid until 1914. Construction, overseen by Brother Luis Echavarri and architect Rómulo Ayerza, progressed slowly. The Parroquia Inmaculado Corazón de María boasts stunning stained glass windows. These were crafted by F. Mayer of Munich. A magnificent 2000-pipe organ, a rarity in Buenos Aires, was installed by E.F. Walker. The church was inaugurated in 1923, but remained unfinished. The 53-meter towers received their crosses in 1926. The high altar wasn’t installed until 1941, marking the project’s true completion. The Parroquia Inmaculado Corazón de María’s story took a dramatic turn in 1937. The construction of 9 de Julio Avenue, intended to cut through Plaza Constitución, threatened the church’s existence. The faithful rallied, successfully preventing its demolition. The church stood isolated as surrounding structures were razed. Another threat emerged in 1978. A proposed elevated highway system, part of which would intersect the church’s block, again put the Parroquia Inmaculado Corazón de María at risk. Community opposition once more saved the church. It remains nestled beside the highway embankment. Decades of vibrations from the highway and the nearby subway line took their toll. By 2008, the church’s iron crosses, nearing collapse, had to be removed. Lacking national landmark status, the Parroquia Inmaculado Corazón de María relied on donations for restoration. Work began in 2010, focusing on the facade and towers. Lighter crosses were installed, but funding shortages halted the project in 2011. The Parroquia Inmaculado Corazón de María’s enduring presence embodies the power of community, faith, and preservation.
