The Parroquia de San Francisco de Asis stands as a significant cultural and religious landmark in Mexico City. Built by Spanish colonists in the 16th century it has seen centuries of change. The church’s history is marked by numerous renovations blending Baroque and Neoclassical styles. It’s a place of worship for the Catholic community holding regular masses and ceremonies.

But this is not just any church. The Parroquia de San Francisco de Asis has a secret. It’s actually the third church built on this very spot. The first two succumbed to the soft soil beneath Mexico City sinking into the ground. This present structure was constructed between 1710 and 1716. It too is sinking. The main facade is hidden from view walled in by later construction. To enter you must go down several steps through the Balvanera Chapel.

This chapel once housed statues but kept its ornate volutes sculpted leaves flowers and estipite columns. Inside is an 18th-century altarpiece dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

More than a place of worship the Parroquia de San Francisco de Asis is a repository of history. A funeral mass for Hernán Cortés was held here after he was thought dead in Central America. The monastery associated with the church played a role in various historical events including the end of the Mexican War of Independence. After the Reform War much of the monastery was demolished to make way for new roads only parts remaining due to demolition costs.
