The imposing facade of the Parroquia de San Agustin in Polanco greets you. Its towering austerity is undeniable. This magnificent church wasn’t always here.

The Parroquia de San Agustin stands as a testament to faith and architectural ambition. It was completed in 1949 the brainchild of architect Leonardo Noriega Stavoli. He collaborated with civil engineer Juan Valero Capetillo. The church’s design incorporates various styles. It is a truly unique blend of old and new.

Notice the impressive buttresses that line the enormous nave. They support the half-dome above the altar. Locals affectionately nicknamed it the “Church of the Tinaco”. This is a reference to the common water tanks found on many Mexican houses. The resemblance is quite striking.

The church boasts a Neo-Byzantine art collection. But perhaps the most historically significant feature is the ciprés. This stunning canopy supported by columns hangs above the main altar. It originally came from the St Joseph Chapel in the old Santa Teresa la Antigua convent. Dating back to the 18th century it adds a layer of history to this already impressive structure.

The facade is adorned with reliefs. They depict the first seven Augustinians to arrive in Mexico in 1533. These figures silently watch over the bustling streets of Polanco. Their presence adds a quiet solemnity to the scene.

When the Parroquia de San Agustin opened it stood beside the Paseo de las Americas. This is now Avenida Horacio. The nearby Parque America is almost the only reminder of the original layout. Plaques in the park encourage people to care for this green space. It is a lovely reminder of the area’s history.

This remarkable church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a beautiful example of architectural creativity and a living link to Mexico’s rich past. It’s a place to reflect and appreciate the artistry and devotion poured into its creation. The Parroquia de San Agustin is truly a treasure of Mexico City.
