What secrets does a simple address hold? Avenida Castillo de Chapultepec 70. This seemingly ordinary location houses the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes, a place brimming with history. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes sits within the Lomas de Reforma neighborhood in the Miguel Hidalgo borough of Mexico City. It’s a beloved public space, a hub of activity within the colonia. This isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes became what it is today through a fascinating evolution. Records reveal its coordinates as 19° 24′ 4.61″ N, 99° 14′ 3.95″ W, placing it firmly in this vibrant community. Originally, the site held a different purpose. In the 19th century, a structure stood here, its purpose unknown. But the story truly begins earlier. Much earlier, in 1532. The Colegio de Niñas y Zuleta, established where Bolívar and Venustiano Carranza streets would later intersect, had a humble start. Its founder, Fray Juan de Zumárraga envisioned a sanctuary for orphaned mestiza and Spanish girls. The Archicofradía del Santísimo Sacramento, based in the Metropolitan Cathedral, oversaw the college. A widow named Inés Álvarez guided the girls, educating them in the Catholic faith. Interestingly, no nuns ran the school; mature married or single women offered their experience instead. The college expanded over time, acquiring several buildings and nearly occupying the entire block. It boasted kitchens, an infirmary, dormitories, a library, orchards, and other facilities. A simple private chapel eventually gave way to a larger temple, later open to the public. The 16th and 17th centuries saw the college rebuilt after disasters struck Mexico City. In 1845, another calamity damaged the temple, necessitating a remodel completed in 1847. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes received its name only in the late 19th century. Today, the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes stands as a neoclassical gem. Inside, a sober elegance reigns. The grandeur of the main altar, dedicated to the Virgen de La Caridad, is captivating. An 18th-century polychrome relief of “The Visitation” crowns the altar. A side chapel, dedicated to the Holy Spirit, displays beautifully detailed sculptures representing the gifts of the Spirit. Mass is celebrated frequently at the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes. Throughout the week, services are held at 8:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 7:00 PM. Sunday masses cater to the community with services at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, and 7:00 PM. So, the next time you find yourself at Avenida Castillo de Chapultepec 70, remember. You’re not just visiting a church. You’re stepping into a living story, a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes.
