Its cylindrical form, a striking departure from traditional church architecture, was the brainchild of architects Ernesto Gómez Gallardo and Ricardo de Robina Rothiot. Their design won a competition in 1949, originally intended for a smaller church facing what was then a modest avenue. This avenue, Ejército Nacional, later expanded in the 1970s, dramatically altering the church’s relationship with its surroundings. The addition of a metal fence and a pedestrian overpass further diminished the church’s visual prominence. Yet, the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz persists, its unique silhouette a bold counterpoint to the surrounding residential buildings. The church stands in stark contrast to other 20th-century ecclesiastical architecture. Inside, the almost perfectly cylindrical, largely unadorned space offers a sanctuary for worshippers. The well-lit interior, undisturbed by the busy avenue outside, provides a tranquil escape from the city’s clamor. The lack of side windows enhances the sense of peaceful seclusion. Here, within these curved walls, the faithful gather to venerate Our Blessed Mother in her invocation as Our Lady Queen of Peace. The image of the Virgin Mary, with its baroque influence, stands gracefully on a cloud-covered platform. Her blue tunic and pink mantle, edged with gold, flow around her. Her right leg is flexed, her feet obscured from view. One hand seems to reach out, offering comfort and connection. The other rests near her heart.
