Elevated above the bustling Calle Otero, the Parroquia de los Santos stands as a testament to community spirit and architectural grandeur. Did you notice the steps leading up to the entrance? They’re a reminder of the church’s unique history. The Parroquia de los Santos wasn’t always here, at least not in this form. Its story begins across the street, at number 132, in the home of the Fabiano family. In 1928, this humble abode became the first home of the parish. Imagine the families from the newly inaugurated “Las Colectivas” housing complex, just a block away, attending services in a family’s living room.

This arrangement was short-lived. By 1929, a crypt was constructed at number 169, serving as the parish’s second home. This crypt, almost as large as the church above it, hosted countless sacraments and holds cherished memories for many long-time parishioners. You can still see remnants of this crypt. The current Parroquia de los Santos, often referred to as the “upper church”, was built directly above it in 1948. This explains the steps leading up to the entrance, a physical echo of the church’s layered past. The construction of the Parroquia de los Santos was a true community effort, a testament to the collaborative spirit of the neighborhood. It was funded by the Hermandad del Santo Cristo del Perdón y Ánimas, supported by Cardinal Copello, and built with contributions from local residents.

The church’s neo-Romanesque style, a favorite of Cardinal Copello, is evident in its solemn gray facade and imposing bell tower. Notice the four columns framing the entrance, topped with archivolts, and the tympanum depicting the resurrected Jesus surrounded by saints. Inside, a single nave is flanked by a series of arched alcoves, some housing small chapels, others adorned with ornamentation. Look up and you’ll see the beautiful wooden ceiling, its sections mirroring the arched divisions of the nave. The Parroquia de los Santos has witnessed significant changes throughout its history, reflecting the evolving religious landscape. Early years saw fervent activity, with processions, special devotions, and the establishment of various internal societies. Under Father Trusso’s leadership, the parish was divided into twelve sections, each led by a “zone leader,” who reported the needs and news of their assigned families to the priest. A map outlining this division still hangs in the parish office, a poignant reminder of this era.

Later, liturgical changes brought about a shift in focus. Many images were removed from the church, leaving only a crucifix and a statue of the Virgin and Child. This was a significant departure from the earlier emphasis on imagery. Subsequent priests have since restored some of the images, reconnecting the church with its namesake, “All Saints.” From a family home to a crypt, and finally to the magnificent structure we see today, the Parroquia de los Santos has evolved alongside the community it serves. It stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the enduring power of collective action.
