This vibrant green space in Rio de Janeiro’s Recreio dos Bandeirantes district has a rich history. It wasn’t always the protected paradise it is today. In fact the land was once divided into large estates. This was back in the 17th century during the era of sesmarias land grants. One belonged to Salvador Correa de Sá e Benevides. He was the governor-general of Rio de Janeiro. The other belonged to a relative Gonçalo Correa de Sá. The area that would become the Parque Natural Municipal Chico Mendes was part of the latter. It was inherited by Vitória Correa de Sá. She later donated it to the Monastery of São Bento.
Over the centuries the land saw many changes. Manioc crops thrived. Farms and sugar mills flourished. In 1871 the Benedictine monks freed their slaves. Eventually the order sold the property. The area faced numerous challenges. Land invasions were common. Illegal deforestation and land sales were rampant. Even real estate agents were involved.
Yet amidst the turmoil a movement emerged. In 1989 residents and environmentalists fought to preserve this last remaining coastal ecosystem. They championed the creation of the Parque Natural Municipal Chico Mendes. They named it in honor of Chico Mendes. He was an environmental activist murdered in Acre in 1988.
The park was officially created on May 8 1989. It covers 43.6 hectares a vital refuge for diverse flora and fauna. Imagine bromeliads ingás and pitangueiras thriving. Rare and threatened species like the broad-snouted caiman three-toed sloths and various birds and mammals found safe haven.
