Did you know Parque México was once a racetrack? Yes right here where we stand was the Jockey Club de México. This vibrant green space in Colonia Hipódromo wasn’t always a park. In the 1920s it transformed. Parque México now serves as the heart of Colonia Hipódromo. It is a cultural center for the entire La Condesa area.
The park’s design is unique for Mexico City. Its paths are organic less rigid than traditional parks. They wind around ponds fountains and other attractions. The park includes elements reminiscent of European gardens. These include walkways and ponds designed by architect Leonardo Noriega and engineer Javier Stávuli.
Parque México is more than just a pretty face. Its Art Deco architecture is stunning. The Foro Lindbergh is the park’s most famous feature. This open-air theater features five monumental pillars. A serpentine pergola surrounds them. The Fuente de los Cántaros a fountain with a sculpture of a woman carrying large jars is another masterpiece. This artwork was created by José María Hernández Urbina. Luz Jiménez the model for this sculpture also posed for Diego Rivera. Can you imagine the stories these sculptures could tell?
The park has seen its share of changes. Renovations in 2008 brought improvements. These included a treatment plant better lighting and work on the Lindbergh Theater. Later renovations continued to update the park. Yet not all residents were happy with every change. Some questioned decisions about green spaces and access. Even today conversations continue about how best to care for Parque México.
But through it all Parque México remains a beloved spot. People gather here. Children play. Adults relax. It’s a place to meet friends to exercise or just to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The park’s unique history and design continue to charm visitors. It remains one of the largest green spaces in Mexico City. Parque México is more than a park. It is a cultural icon and a symbol of the vibrant Condesa area. It is a reminder of Mexico City’s rich past and its promising future.
