Eleven hectares of tranquility. That’s the Parque Botânico do Monteiro-Mor. Imagine strolling through its leafy pathways. The air is alive with the scent of blossoms and the gentle rustle of leaves. This is more than just a park. This is a living testament to history.

The Parque Botânico do Monteiro-Mor in Lisbon boasts a rich history dating back to the 18th century. It was originally planted by Pedro José de Noronha Camões de Albuquerque Moniz e Sousa the 3rd Marquis of Angeja. The Italian botanist Domenico Vandelli oversaw the planting. He brought his expertise to the Quinta do Monteiro-Mor transforming it into a botanical paradise.

But the story doesn’t end there. After the Quinta do Monteiro-Mor was sold in 1840 the park underwent significant improvements. Rare species were introduced. Statues were added. The design incorporated elements of popular English gardens. Botanists like Friedrich Welwitsch and Jacob Weist contributed their skills. João Batista Possidónio a student of Weist managed the park until 1912. He dedicated over 25 years of his life to the conservation of this remarkable space. His passion created the beauty we see today.

The park wasn’t immune to tragedy. A devastating cyclone in February 1941 damaged parts of it. Yet the Parque Botânico do Monteiro-Mor persevered. It survived. It remained a symbol of resilience and natural beauty. The park endured. It survived neglect and restoration. The state purchased it on February 4 1975. Extensive renovations followed. They ensured its survival for future generations.

Today you can admire ancient Araucaria Sequoia Cupressus Acacia and Podocarpus trees. A boxwood garden with a rose garden sits in front of the Museu do Teatro. A riot of colour bursts forth from flowerbeds. Amaryllis daisies chlorophytums pasqueflowers poinsettias hydrangeas lilies and pitchers all contribute to the vibrant display.

Almeida Garrett’s poem “No Lumiar” immortalized the park. He describes its beauty. He captures its unique charm. It lives on in verse. It resonates in the hearts of those who appreciate its enduring appeal. The Parque Botânico do Monteiro-Mor isn’t just a green space. It’s a living poem. It’s a sanctuary. It’s a place where history nature and art intertwine. A place where you can lose yourself in the beauty of centuries past.
