“A church built by whispers and faith,” a local once told me about Paróquia São João Batista. This seemingly simple statement captured my imagination, drawing me to this unassuming yet historically rich parish in Campo Grande, Rio de Janeiro. Paróquia São João Batista isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the community’s resilience, devotion, and the intertwined stories of its people. The original structure, a humble chapel made of “pau-a-pique,” was erected in 1672 by João Vaz Pereira. Imagine the early settlers, their hands roughened by labor, raising this simple structure as a beacon of faith in the burgeoning settlement. This chapel, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, served as the spiritual heart of Itaboraí for nearly half a century. By 1679, it became a curacy, independent from the Matrix of Santo Antonio de Sá. Then, a royal decree in 1696 elevated it to the status of a parish, solidifying its importance in the community. However, the fragile pau-a-pique construction couldn’t withstand the test of time. Deterioration set in, necessitating a complete rebuild. The new Paróquia São João Batista, built of sturdy stone and mortar, began construction in 1725, a mere 20 “braças” from its predecessor. This marked a new chapter in the parish’s history. The reconstruction, spearheaded by the same João Vaz Pereira and completed in 1742, wasn’t without its challenges. Funding was a constant concern, with contributions from the Royal Farm and parishioners alike. The donation of land by Domingos Vaz Pereira and the financial support of Captain Manuel Antunes Ferreira proved crucial. Even his wife, Catharina de Lemos e Duque-Estrada, contributed resources and labor, securing a family altar and burial plot within the church. The story of Paróquia São João Batista also echoes the struggles and triumphs of enslaved individuals. They toiled alongside other laborers, their forced labor contributing to the very structure that symbolized faith and freedom. Their sweat and toil became an integral part of the church’s foundation, a silent yet powerful testament to their resilience. The parish continued to evolve, undergoing further expansions in 1767, 1772, and finally in 1782, resulting in the structure we see today. Paróquia São João Batista became a hub of social and political life in Itaboraí. It hosted not only religious rituals but also municipal and provincial elections, becoming a focal point for community gatherings. Its historical and architectural significance was recognized in 1970 with its listing by IPHAN, solidifying its status as a cherished landmark. Paróquia São João Batista stands as more than just a building. It is a vessel of stories, a reflection of the community’s spirit, and a reminder of the enduring power of faith.
