Gazing up at the Paróquia São Domingos de Gusmão, can you sense the echoes of devotion? This Tijuca neighborhood church, dedicated to Saint Dominic, isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith and community. While Saint Dominic may not be widely venerated in Brazil, the Paróquia São Domingos de Gusmão stands proudly. It joins a select few churches dedicated to the saint, including one in Niterói and another in Salvador. This particular parish, here in the heart of Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, celebrates its patron saint every August 8th. The story of the Paróquia São Domingos de Gusmão begins with a vision. In 1967, Deacon Vinícius Nelson proposed the creation of a new parish to Cardinal Dom Jaime Câmara. The Cardinal agreed, under one condition. Deacon Vinícius needed to secure the support of the Third Order of Saint Dominic. Driven by his vision, Deacon Vinícius joined the Order. After mass, he would passionately share his idea with the community. The idea resonated. He soon gained the support of long-standing members, including Mr. Novello Santo and his family. This collective dream began to take shape. Initially, services were held in a modified house at number 120 Rua José Higino. Walls were removed to create a larger space for worship. The adjacent house, number 116, was rented out. Over time, portions of the land were sold. First, a section at the back during Father Lucas’s tenure. Later, the front portion, number 116, was sold during Monsignor Alfir’s administration. Now, think about Saint Dominic himself. Born in Spain in 1170, Dominic de Guzmán came from a wealthy and devout family. He dedicated his life to studying and helping those in need. In Valencia, he sold his belongings, even precious study parchments, to feed the poor. At 24, he became a priest. His intelligence and skill were recognized. He even assisted King Alfonso VII in diplomatic affairs. So, as you stand before the Paróquia São Domingos de Gusmão, remember the layers of history woven into its foundation. From a simple house-chapel to a thriving parish, it reflects the unwavering devotion to Saint Dominic. This isn’t just a church; it’s a living story of faith, community, and the enduring power of a shared dream.
