The imposing façade of the Paróquia Santo Antônio greets you. Its history whispers from the very stones.

This isn’t just any church. This is the Paróquia Santo Antônio a vital part of Rio’s heritage. Built between 1608 and 1620 its construction started after Franciscan friars arrived in 1592. They initially settled near Praia de Santa Luzia. Later they built a small hermitage on a hill. In 1607 they received the hill now Morro de Santo Antônio. The first mass was celebrated in 1615. The church and convent were finally completed in 1620.

The Paróquia Santo Antônio isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to history. The friars even drained a nearby swamp the Lagoa de Santo Antônio. This area became the current Largo da Carioca. The resulting ditch became Rua da Vala now Rua Uruguaiana.

Between 1697 and 1701 the church’s façade expanded. It gained a gallery with three entry arches. Later Baroque portals replaced those arches. The church’s interior is simple. It features a rectangular shape and a single nave. The main chapel and side altars boast gilded carving from 1716 to 1719. This is late Baroque style more typical of the 17th than the 18th century. The main altar features a statue of Saint Anthony. It includes characteristic twisted columns and concentric arches. The walls and ceiling are fully covered in carvings. Painted panels depict Saint Anthony’s life.

The Paróquia Santo Antônio’s convent underwent many changes. It is mainly an 18th-century building. However many modifications occurred in the 20th century. The large façade facing Largo da Carioca has almost square windows. These are widely spaced showing the building’s age. A large stone corner feature is topped with a pinnacle. Inside is a square cloister still used by the friars.

The convent’s sacristy is remarkable. Built around 1714 it’s considered Rio’s most beautiful. It features carved cabinets Portuguese tiles and Baroque moldings. Paintings of Saint Anthony adorn the ceiling. The floor has Portuguese marble mosaics. A magnificent jacaranda wood chest is also present. It’s carved and signed by Manuel Alves Setúbal in 1745. A Portuguese lavabo carved from Estremoz marble is nearby. This room also contains a Manueline style jacaranda table. It belonged to Frei Francisco de Santa Teresa de Jesus Sampaio. He was a key figure in Brazil’s independence. The declaration read by Prince Regent Dom Pedro was written on this table. This momentous declaration took place on January 9 1822. He vowed to remain in Brazil.

The Paróquia Santo Antônio is more than just stones and mortar. It is a place steeped in faith history and intrigue. It holds within its walls the stories of centuries. Its legacy continues to resonate. The legacy lives on in its quiet grandeur.
