Let’s step back in time. The Congregation of the Sacred Hearts arrived in Brazil in 1925. The Dutch province sent three missionaries. Among them was Father Eustáquio van Lieshout. His beatification process is ongoing.

In 1932, five more priests arrived from Spain. Cardinal Sebastião Leme entrusted them with parishes. These included Nossa Senhora do Desterro and Santa Rita do Turriassú.

The Cardinal promised a parish in the city center. Tijuca was chosen as the location in 1934. Father Alberto Alvarez was appointed the first pastor in 1936. Cardinal Dom Sebastião Leme officiated. In 1952, Dom Jaime de Barros Câmara inaugurated the new Igreja Matriz. Construction had begun in 1947. The church became Igreja Matriz in 1936. This happened with the creation of the Parish of the Sacred Hearts.

The Igreja Sagrados Corações can seat 400 people. It hosts social assistance programs. These include adult literacy and the Fraternity Service. The Obra Social Casa do Pe. Damião serves the elderly. Medical and dental care are provided. Medicines are distributed. General guidance is offered. There is also a computer school and handicraft activities. Financial support is given to aid groups. Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings take place here.
