“A dispensary, a new church, a dream.” That’s how the story of Paróquia Sagrado Coração de Jesus in Rio de Janeiro begins. It all started with Frei Thiago, the parish priest of Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Guia back in 1934. He envisioned a place to care for the community’s needs and ease the burden on the main church. His dream took shape on April 19, 1936, with the inauguration of the “Sete Santos Fundadores” dispensary. This dispensary’s hall gradually transformed into a celebratory space, a “new matriz” that evolved into the church we see today, completed around 1950. In 1945, the Dehonian Fathers took over this “new matriz.” The Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Dehonians) purchased the property from the Congregation Sete Santos Fundadores (Servites) for 350,000 cruzeiros. The church’s name also changed to “Igreja Cristo Rei e Sete Santos Fundadores.” The Paróquia Sagrado Coração de Jesus, as we know it, was officially born on October 27, 1963. Since then, the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has led this community, continuing Frei Thiago’s initial vision. The church stands as a testament to their dedication and the evolving needs of the community it serves. Paróquia Sagrado Coração de Jesus is more than just a building. It’s a living story, shaped by dreams, transitions, and the unwavering spirit of faith.
