Founded in 1945 the Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes stands as a testament to faith. It’s nestled in the Maré neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. This wasn’t always a peaceful place. The Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes witnessed significant population growth. Favela expansion surrounded the church.
Initially the Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes had limited resources. Few priests were available to serve the growing community. The expansion of the favelas created a need for more places of worship. Members of the Contemplative Movement Padre Charles De Foucauld stepped in to help. They came from Cuneo Italy. For forty years these dedicated individuals provided pastoral care. They supported the community through various social initiatives.
Over the decades many communities under the Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes’s jurisdiction gained independence. They became parishes in their own right. This resulted in a reduction of chapels directly under its control. In 2018 the Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes oversaw three communities. Father Jan Baraniecki a Palotino priest led the parish. The Palotinos are also known as the Society of the Catholic Apostle. The chapels of Nossa Senhora Aparecida and Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro are on Morro do Timbau. The São Pedro and São Paulo chapel serves the Bento Ribeiro Dantas community. Each community maintains its own social activities guided by the parish’s overall direction. The Paróquia Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes remains a vital part of the community. It’s a beacon of hope and spiritual guidance in a dynamic urban landscape. It continues to serve those who seek comfort and connection through faith.
