Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Rio de Janeiro, a sacred haven awaits: Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Monte Claro dos Poloneses. This church, nestled in the heart of Flamengo at Rua Marquês de Abrantes, 215, holds a unique story. Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Monte Claro dos Poloneses became a beacon for the Polish community in 1953. It’s dedicated to Our Lady of Monte Claro, also known as Black Madonna of Częstochowa or Jasna Góra, the patron saint of Poland. This connection is deeply felt, especially during Sunday mass, when the hymns and prayers resonate in Polish, bridging the distance between Brazil and the homeland. The church building itself has a fascinating history, predating its Polish patronage. It started as a humble chapel existing as early as 1720. Queen Joaquina, wife of King Dom João VI, acquired this chapel in 1810 as her private oratory. After the royal family’s return to Portugal, the chapel became part of the Brazilian Imperial estate. In 1842, the Marquis of Abrantes purchased it. He then commissioned the construction of the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows on the original chapel’s site. This new chapel, much as we see it today, was finally consecrated in 1864. The chapel changed hands several times until Sarah de Freitas Borges inherited it in 1916, under the condition that after her death, it would be transferred to the Imperial Brotherhood of Our Lady of Glory of Outeiro. This ensured the preservation of worship at the chapel. In 1926, the brotherhood officially took ownership, dedicating the worship to Our Lady of Piety. Interestingly, from 1922 to 1951, the chapel was leased to the English community. Paróquia Nossa Senhora do Monte Claro dos Poloneses stands not just as a place of worship, but as a testament to the enduring faith and cultural heritage of the Polish community in Rio de Janeiro. It’s a place where history and devotion intertwine, offering solace and connection to those seeking a spiritual home far from their ancestral land.
