Welcome to the Paróquia do Loreto. It is in the Freguesia neighborhood of Jacarepaguá. This important church has a fascinating history. It is linked to a tale of miraculous transport and deep faith.

Loreto is an Italian city. It holds one of Catholicism’s most important pilgrimage sites. The Santuário della Santa Casa is there. Tradition says this is the house where the Angel Gabriel told Mary she would birth Jesus. Legend says angels moved this house from Nazareth to Loreto in 1294. This miraculous event is why Nossa Senhora do Loreto became the patron saint of aviation.

The history of Paróquia do Loreto in Rio is intertwined with this legend. In 1661, the Freguesia Paróquia de Nossa Senhora de Loreto e Santo Antônio de Jacarepaguá was created. It was on Padre Manuel de Araújo’s farm. This was the fourth Parish in Rio de Janeiro. The first church was inaugurated in 1664.

Over the years the church has undergone several renovations. The most important one occurred in 1896. In the 20th century, new works were added. They always took care not to modify the architecture of the church. Its traditional baroque style was preserved.

In 1921, the Barnabite fathers took over the Parish. They have been taking care of its destiny with zeal ever since.

In 1723, Frei Agostinho de Santa Maria wrote about the devotion to Nossa Senhora do Loreto. He said that all the residents of that Parish have great devotion to this Lady. They seek her in their work, struggles, and needs. They never leave her presence confused because her piety always consoles them.

In 1920, Pope Benedict XV declared Nossa Senhora de Loreto the Patroness of Aviators. The connection to aviation grew stronger. In 1970, the church was granted the title of National Sanctuary of Aeronautics. This was by Cardinal D. Jaime de Barros Câmara. It was at the request of the Minister of Aeronautics, Marcio de Souza Melo. This coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the Patron Saint of Aviation.

The church’s architecture reflects its history. The exterior shows a Mannerist style. The frontispiece has a triangular tympanum. The interior is in the Rococo style. The main altar features the patron saint.

Today, Paróquia do Loreto continues to be a place of faith. It is a place of love. It brings together countless faithful in movements and services. It offers a space for living together. It is a space for fraternity, welcoming and sharing.

As you stand here you can feel the weight of history and faith. Paróquia do Loreto stands as a testament to devotion. It embodies the story of a miraculous journey. It also shows the power of faith. It reminds us of the story of Nossa Senhora do Loreto. Her house was carried by angels and her role as the protector of those who fly.
