Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? The Paróquia de Sant’Ana in Rio de Janeiro stands before you a testament to faith and resilience. This isn’t just any church. It’s the first Sanctuary of Perpetual Adoration in Brazil. Imagine the devotion that birthed this sacred space in 1926.

The Paróquia de Sant’Ana holds a special place in Rio’s heart. It’s named for the grandmother of Jesus. More than just a religious site it is a historical landmark. The church first opened its doors in 1735. Initially people worshipped its patron saint in the Igreja de São Domingos de Gusmão. This church however was demolished in 1943 to make way for Avenida Presidente Vargas. The Paróquia de Sant’Ana became even more important then. It was officially established in 1814 by decree of Dom João VI. The original building served until 1870. It then underwent reconstruction and later renovations in 2003.

Within its walls rest precious relics and symbols. One remarkable relic is that of the Virgin Martyr Santa Prisciliana. This was a gift from Pope Gregory XIII to Emperor Dom Pedro II. Imagine the journey this artifact took arriving by ship from the Vatican. Upon its arrival a multitude of faithful carried it from Praça Mauá along what is now Avenida Marechal Floriano to the original Igreja de Sant’Ana. This church was a cornerstone of the city’s development.

Sant’Ana is the second patron saint of Rio de Janeiro after São Sebastião. The Paróquia de Sant’Ana has a mystical and magical aura. It’s a place of deep faith. A place of Perpetual Adoration. I once witnessed a Rosary of Perpetual Adoration led by the Manto de Maria group. They meet every 25th of the month. The devotion was palpable everyone praying in unison. A young man played his guitar between mysteries. Then a moving mass was celebrated by Padre Adonias.

As I left a kind elderly black woman looked at me. She said “Saúde para Sant’Ana”. I left feeling strengthened. I had discovered another historical landmark. I learned that Sant’Ana has watched over Rio for centuries.

My visit to the Paróquia de Sant’Ana was more than just sightseeing. It was a journey into the soul of Rio de Janeiro itself a tangible link to its rich past and enduring faith. Its walls whisper stories of devotion perseverance and the unwavering spirit of a city. The Paróquia de Sant’Ana is a place to reflect on faith and history and a place worth exploring.
