“Lost in shadows” might be the first thought that crosses your mind as you gaze upon the Paróquia da Imaculada Conceição da Gávea. Hemmed in by towering buildings on all sides, the church seems to recede into the background. Yet, its history sings a different tune. The Paróquia da Imaculada Conceição da Gávea was once a prominent landmark. It stood tall in a rural landscape.

Let’s delve into the story of this resilient church. The primitive chapel was built before 1700. It stood on the lands of Engenho d’El Rei. By the 1850s a new chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição arose to serve the parish of São João Batista da Lagoa.

In 1873 Gávea was elevated to a parish. Its boundaries stretched from Arpoador to São Conrado. That same year the Freguesia de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Gávea was created. The church’s patron saint gave the new parish its name.

The church has witnessed the evolution of Rio de Janeiro. It stands as a testament to the historical changes in this region.

However, disaster struck in 1934. A fire ravaged the Paróquia da Imaculada Conceição da Gávea. Much of its original collection was lost. The parishioners of Gávea rallied to rebuild it. The rebuilt matriz showcases an architectural style. Its volumetric features and stonework are consistent with its 19th-century origins.

The main facade features a single central keystone. There are two side doors with lowered arches. Two towers rise above. They feature windows, simple steeples, and a cross on the spire. A window sits above the choir with a lowered lintel. The side windows are rectangular and made of original stonework. The triangular pediment displays a simplified relief. It features a Marian monogram in the tympanum. An upper finish in angles with a cross sits on the acroterion.

Consider its position relative to the street. The church’s non-perpendicular placement hints at its past. Before urbanization, this street was a colonial path. It was named Boa Vista. It ran through the lands of Engenho de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Lagoa. It provided access to the western borders.

The arrival of the streetcar in the 1870s spurred growth. Factories, worker villages, and the Jockey Club followed. The establishment of PUC-Rio’s campus in the 1950s further transformed the area. The real estate boom that began in the 1970s completed Gávea’s rapid urbanization.

Today the Paróquia da Imaculada Conceição da Gávea stands as a reminder. It recalls a time when the city was vastly different. The church along with the old road echoes the past. These fragments of spatial forms have been updated. They have been recognized for new urban and social functions. They make visible the streetcar tracks beneath the worn asphalt of Praça Santos Dumont. They include the graffitied walls of the Jockey. Or the palm trees in the arboretum of the Botanical Garden. They reveal that the urban fabric is a collective construction. It is a historical one. They express living and dynamic scenarios. They comprise a city.
