Paroisse Saint-Michel

What a sight, Paroisse Saint-Michel, where history and faith intertwine. Right before you, the impressive church stands tall, its distinctive architecture a testament to its rich history. Founded in 1858, this building stands as the third church dedicated to Saint Michael in the area. Though the original structure was lost to time, the current Paroisse Saint-Michel emerged in 1913. The construction, however, encountered a significant pause during World War I, only to be completed in 1938. Paroisse Saint-Michel’s architectural style is a fascinating blend of Romanesque and Byzantine influences. Its grand nave, a testament to the vision of architect Bernard Haubold, is adorned with 28 monolithic granite columns, each weighing a hefty 6 tonnes! Looking up, your gaze is drawn to the imposing campanile. Standing at a height of 37 meters, this bell tower houses four bells. And perched atop it, is a bronze statue of the Archangel Michael, a replica of the iconic statue atop the Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey. The original, too, was sculpted by the renowned Emmanuel Frémiet. Today, it stands as a silent guardian, watching over the neighborhood and its residents.
