Is this where it all began? The Park Nicollet Clinic stands before us, a testament to the vision of a group of World War II veterans. These doctors, trained at the University of Minnesota, decided to establish a medical practice in the then-suburban St. Louis Park in 1950. They pooled their resources, securing a 99-year lease on a portion of Morten Arneson’s nursery on Excelsior Boulevard. Imagine, a medical center rising from amidst the greenery! The Park Nicollet Clinic, or rather, its precursor, the St. Louis Park Medical Center, opened its doors on July 2, 1951. The day’s earnings? A mere $16 from just five patients. The clinic grew rapidly, adding more doctors and expanding its facilities. By 1960, the St. Louis Park Medical Center Research Foundation was established, fueling the pursuit of medical advancement. The clinic’s growth demanded more space. In a bold move, they purchased the land across Excelsior Boulevard in 1966. This land, however, had a peculiar past: it was the site of the former Beltline Pay Dump! From a humble beginning to a thriving medical center, the Park Nicollet Clinic stands as a symbol of visionary thinking and community service.
