Have you ever wondered about the whispers of history carried on the gentle currents of a creek? Welcome to Pāremoremo Creek a place where the past intertwines with the present. Nestled on the northern fringe of Auckland Pāremoremo Creek isn’t just a waterway. It’s a thread connecting ancient Māori legends to modern-day life.

Long ago before European settlement the area around Pāremoremo Creek held deep significance for the local Māori. Legend speaks of Rangi-hua-moa a Te Ūkitai Waiohua ancestor and grandmother of Kiwi Tāmaki. She is said to have eaten the very last moa eggs here at Pāremoremo a poignant moment marking the end of an era. The creek itself likely played a vital role in the lives of these early inhabitants providing sustenance and a crucial link to the Upper Waitematā Harbour.

The arrival of European settlers in the 1840s brought significant changes. Maurice and Mary Kelly established a timber business here a testament to the creek’s early resource value. Pāremoremo grew into a small community known for its rich agricultural lands farms market gardens and orchards. Imagine the bustling activity at the wharf at the foot of Attwood Road as launches and ferries carried goods and people to and from the city.

But perhaps the most unexpected part of Pāremoremo Creek’s story is its connection to Auckland Prison New Zealand’s only maximum-security prison. Established in the mid-1960s the prison altered the landscape around the creek. To accommodate the prison workers a village of 130 houses was built. This unique blend of rural life and maximum security continues to shape the character of Pāremoremo to this day. Thirty of those houses were later sold in 1996 after legal battles.

Today Pāremoremo Creek quietly flows through a landscape marked by both its ancient past and its recent history. A nearby scenic reserve offers a glimpse of the larger bush reserve while Sanders Park a relatively new addition to the area provides recreation for the community. The creek remains a vital element in this complex and fascinating story. It is a hidden treasure that reflects Auckland’s diverse history a narrative woven into the very fabric of the land.

So as we stand here by Pāremoremo Creek remember that this seemingly quiet waterway holds within it echoes of moa hunts the industry of early settlers and the present-day reality of a maximum-security prison. Pāremoremo Creek is more than just water it’s a story waiting to be discovered.
