High above Opanuku stands Parekura Peak. Have you ever wondered about the stories hidden within its name?

Parekura Peak offers more than just a stunning view. It echoes tales of love, dedication, and ancient Māori history. The peak shares its name with Parekura, the wife of Panuku. Their story is woven into the landscape around us.

Long ago Parekura was kidnapped. In a desperate attempt to be found she plucked white feathers from her cloak. These feathers created a trail. Panuku her husband followed the trail, his heart filled with determination. He found Parekura, defeated her kidnapper and proved his love.

The nearby Parekura Stream also carries her name. The stream and the peak remind us of this powerful love story. The stream flows near Opanuku. It eventually joins Te Wai o Pareira, now known as Henderson Creek.

Te Wai o Pareira itself is named after Pareira. She was the niece of Toitehuatahi, a great navigator. She settled near Westhaven Marina. Her name honored the bay and the tidal estuary. This area was vital to pre-European Māori life.

Te Kōpua was a strategic landing place for waka at the head of Te Wai o Pareira. It connected to walking routes into the valleys. A small pā was built here but was later destroyed during the development of Henderson.

The waters provided food, fresh water, and resources for weaving. Shellfish attracted marine birds. Settlements like Ōrukuwai and Ōrangihina thrived. These were the homes of Te Kawerau ā Maki ancestors. Ōrukuwai relied on the swampy shoreline for gardening. It remained occupied until European influence changed everything.

Today Parekura Peak offers stunning panoramic views. It allows us to reflect on these stories. As you stand here consider the dedication of Panuku and the courage of Parekura. Think about the importance of Te Wai o Pareira.

Parekura Peak connects us to the past. It highlights the enduring relationship between the land and its people. It is a reminder of love and resilience. Remember these stories as you take in the breathtaking scenery. The peak offers a moment to appreciate the rich history beneath our feet.
