Is this where the great Virgil rests? Parco Vergiliano – Tomba di Virgilio is a peaceful park in Naples. It’s known for the tomb believed to belong to the Roman poet Virgil. Parco Vergiliano – Tomba di Virgilio also holds the tomb of another famous poet, Giacomo Leopardi. He was moved here in 1939 from a church in Fuorigrotta. While the tomb is said to be Virgil’s, some believe his remains were moved to Castel dell’Ovo during Norman rule. This was to protect them from theft and ensure the city retained his divine protection. Within Parco Vergiliano – Tomba di Virgilio you’ll find the entrance to the Crypta Neapolitana. This ancient tunnel dates back to the Augustan age and connected Naples to the Phlegraean Fields. It’s currently closed for restoration but stands as a reminder of the area’s rich history. Parco Vergiliano – Tomba di Virgilio is a place of quiet reflection and a tribute to two literary giants.
