Is there anything more peaceful than a children’s laughter in a park? Welcome to Parc Lèon Pfeffer. This park offers a small haven in Lyon. It’s located at the corner of Rue Gouraud and Rue Montagny.
Parc Lèon Pfeffer occupies 1370 square meters. The entrance is on Rue Gouraud. The park is rectangle-shaped. It is enclosed by a barrier.
A circular path goes around the park. Another path runs through the center. This path widens near benches. A circular area sits at the center. It features soft asphalt and children’s games. A slide takes advantage of a gentle slope. Grass and trees grow around the paths. Some bushes line the north barrier of Parc Lèon Pfeffer.
The park’s name honors Lèon Pfeffer. He was born in Nancy on October 12 1922. Pfeffer joined the resistance in Lyon. He fought with the Carmagnole FTP MOI battalion. This battalion played a key role. It was during the Villeurbanne uprising from August 24-26 1944. A square in Villeurbanne also bears the battalion’s name.
Lèon Pfeffer was killed on Place Bellecour. This happened on August 27 1944. A stone figure at that location commemorates him. His story is documented online by the Museum of the Resistance. Simon Fryd is also honored with a street in Lyon.
