“Did Napoleon III’s honeymoon really happen here?” I ask. Welcome to Parc de Villeneuve l’Étang. This isn’t just any park. It’s a historical treasure trove. Right here in front of us lies a place rich in stories. Stories of emperors and empresses. Stories of a chateau now gone.
The Parc de Villeneuve l’Étang has witnessed centuries of change. Once the grand estate of Villeneuve-l’Étang boasted a magnificent chateau. This chateau was rebuilt in 1698 by the renowned Jules Hardouin-Mansart. It belonged to powerful figures. Louis François Marie Le Tellier de Barbezieux owned it. Then it passed to Michel Chamillart. Chamillart expanded the estate to 450 arpents. He even had a second chateau built. That one housed the estate manager the fountain keeper and the gardener.
Chamillart’s time ended in 1709. He lost favor and the estate was divided. The grand chateau of l’Étang was destroyed. But the story doesn’t end there. In the early 19th century Marshal Soult owned the remaining estate of Villeneuve. He sold it to the Duchess of Angoulême in 1821. She was the daughter of Louis XVI. Imagine her life here. The park was huge at 200 arpents 100 hectares.
Then came Napoleon III. In 1852 he bought the estate. He and Empress Eugénie spent their honeymoon here. He built more structures on the property. The grounds were beautiful. There was an English-style park. It had winding paths. A central island a picturesque bridge a sheepfold and a farm. He even built a house for the Cent Gardes. That’s the squadron that protected him and his family.
The chateau itself was demolished in the 1880s. The estate later became public land. Louis Pasteur used a portion of the park to pursue his research. The buildings Napoleon III had constructed still stand. They are a testament to the park’s rich past. They stand as a silent witness to a rich history. This park you see today is a beautiful green space. But it also holds the echoes of emperors scientists and powerful families. The Parc de Villeneuve l’Étang is more than a park.
