Parc Charles Aznavour

In 1840, a shrewd merchant named Cohen envisioned a tranquil escape from the bustling city of Marseille. He began constructing a grand estate. This estate would later become the beloved Parc Charles Aznavour. The estate, initially called Maison Blanche, meaning “White House,” quickly became a local landmark. The original 19th-century mansion still stands within the park. It now serves as the town hall for Marseille’s 5th sector. The park itself spans five hectares. It features a picturesque lake, sprawling lawns, and wooded areas. Many of the park’s notable trees, including magnolias, sequoias, cedars, yews, plane trees, sweetgums, and a Siberian elm, date back to the 19th century. Later additions include the bald cypress, gingko biloba, chestnut, maple, poplar, oak, sophora, tulip tree, holly, and ash trees. More recently, hazelnut trees, nettle trees, a paulownia, and even a banana tree have joined this diverse arboreal collection. In 1920, a Swiss family purchased the Maison Blanche estate. They added the lake that now graces the park. They also modified the mansion. Large bay windows were installed on the facade. The city of Marseille acquired the estate in 1978, transforming it into the public park we enjoy today. Parc Charles Aznavour offers a playground for children, picnic areas, and seasonal refreshments. It’s easily accessible by bus routes 16 and 16S. The park also hosts the annual Festival des Arts Éphémères. This contemporary art festival takes place in late May or early June. The festival utilizes both the mansion’s interior and the park grounds, showcasing artwork throughout the estate. In July 2024, the park was officially renamed to honor the famed French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour. This followed a poignant event in June 2015 where Aznavour planted an olive tree in the park. This act commemorated the centennial of the Armenian genocide. As you stroll through Parc Charles Aznavour today, remember the layers of history interwoven within its landscape.
