In 2015 there were whispers of a massive sale. Pararēkau and Kõpuahingahinga Islands were reportedly purchased for $41.5 million. Current developers however deny this sale ever happened. The plan changed to individual house lots.
Local efforts to halt development unfortunately failed. Concerns remain. Mangrove removal during construction increased erosion risks. The ecology of the area is at stake.
