Papatoetoe Library is more than just a repository of books. It is a War Memorial Library. It stands as a testament to remembrance and community spirit.
Let’s turn back the clock. The original Papatoetoe Civic War Memorial opened in 1955. It stood proudly on St George Street next to the Town Hall. This two-story building was a hub. It housed a public library, restrooms and a concert chamber. The Papatoetoe RSA clubrooms were downstairs. Upstairs held the Papatoetoe Borough offices. Council chambers bustled with civic activity.
A roll of honor was unveiled. It listed men from Papatoetoe and East Tamaki. These men had died in the two World Wars. The building was formally dedicated as a war memorial later that November.
In March 1974, the Papatoetoe RSA moved. They found a new home on Wallace Road. A new municipal library opened next door in December 1978. This new library became the town’s war memorial. The official opening ceremony was held on February 26, 1979.
Chrome-plated letters were moved. They once graced the old library’s entrance. Now, they read “Papatoetoe Civic War Memorial” on the new library’s eastern wall. The dedication plaque followed. It found a new home in the new library lobby. Additional plaques were also installed. A revised roll of honor was created. It honored those from Papatoetoe and East Tamaki. The RSA holds what appears to be the original roll.
In 2013, the space between the RSA and the library was revamped. It now includes part of an outdoor artwork. Regan Gentry created “Learning Your Stripes.” He enlivened the RSA walls. Colored aluminum stripes represent war medal ribbons. Curved benches painted poppy red outline a totara tree trunk.
Papatoetoe Library is now a branch of Auckland Libraries. Its correct name is Papatoetoe War Memorial Library.
Today, Papatoetoe Library provides many services. Printing, photocopying and scanning are available. You can use computers and free WiFi. Book a librarian for assistance. This service is also available in Mandarin and Hindi. A Justice of the Peace is available too. Check for available times. Meeting rooms can be booked.
