“Whaka pokai tara,” whispered the wind through the trees around Papatoetoe Intermediate School. This translates to “Lead, as Tara led,” the motto of this bustling school. Papatoetoe Intermediate School has stood as a beacon of learning since 1953. It first opened its doors near Dominion Breweries on Great South Road. Originally, it was almost named Middlemore Intermediate. Then, upon opening in February 1953 with 650 students, it became Otara Intermediate. Imagine those first students, arriving at the brand-new double-storey building with its sixteen classrooms and specialized rooms like the library. Mr. R.A. Robbie, the first headmaster, surely felt the weight of expectation as he welcomed them. A school committee and a home and school association quickly formed, laying the groundwork for community involvement that continues to this day. Papatoetoe Intermediate School wasn’t always at its current location on Motatau Road. In 1958, a new school opened on Portage Road and took the name Papatoetoe Intermediate. This caused some confusion, especially with the developing suburb of Ōtara nearby. In 1968, after the Portage Road school became Kedgley Intermediate, Otara Intermediate finally claimed the name Papatoetoe Intermediate School. Today, Papatoetoe Intermediate School thrives with a current roll of 792 students. Led by Principal Ms. Pauline Cornwell, the school continues its dedication to fostering effective communicators and connected learners. The school emphasizes the importance of healthy minds and bodies, reflected in their STAR values of safety, trust, attitude, and respect.
