Gazing across the Papakura Channel, can you imagine hauling a waka across land? This channel, part of the Manukau Harbour, was once a vital portage for Tāmaki Māori. They would drag their waka between the southeastern Manukau Harbour and the Wairoa River. This portage likely followed the route of the Old Wairoa Road. The Papakura Channel played a crucial role in their lives. It provided access to the resources of the Hunua Ranges and the Manukau Harbour. The surrounding area thrived with gardens, particularly on the slopes of Pukekiwiriki, a nearby volcano. Now, imagine the Papakura Channel during the Musket Wars in the 1820s. The threat of Ngāpuhi war parties from the north forced the people to abandon their homes. They sought refuge with Waikato Tainui relatives, returning only in the 1830s. Even today, the Papakura Channel remains a significant landmark. It reflects the rich history of the Tāmaki Māori and their connection to the land and waterways. The channel stands as a reminder of their resilience and resourcefulness, shaped by both conflict and prosperity.
