Did Chespirito really crave tortas? Let’s explore Panteón Francés, a place of stories and secrets. Panteón Francés, also known as Panteón Francés de la Piedad, isn’t your average cemetery. Located in southern Mexico City, near the Centro Medico Metro station, it’s the final resting place of many notable figures. Access is restricted to family members, adding to its mystique. The comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños, “Chespirito,” is buried here. Legend has it he loved ham tortas, and fans still leave them at his grave. Panteón Francés opened in 1865 during Maximilian I’s reign. It expanded in 1877 and 1920, but sales of plots ceased in 1942. A new cemetery, Panteon Frances de San Joaquin, opened then and remains active today. The older Panteón Francés boasts stunning mortuary statues and a neo-Gothic tower visible from Cuauhtémoc Avenue. It holds the remains of actress Pina Pellicer, political activist Ricardo Flores Magón, actor Mauricio Garcés, and many more. Each tomb tells a story, whispering of lives lived and legacies left behind. Panteón Francés is more than a cemetery. It’s a time capsule, a repository of art and history, and a testament to the lives that shaped Mexico. It’s a place where stories continue, etched in stone and whispered by the wind.
