Doesn’t the name Pannlake conjure up images of shimmering water and serene landscapes? This may not be exactly what you expect. It is a unique spot in Bremen with its own story.

Pannlake is a wetland area. More specifically, it is a marsh. It is a unique environment where land and water meet. Marshes play a crucial role in our ecosystem. They are biodiversity hotspots and natural water filters.

The Stadtwaldsee is located in the Horn-Lehe district of Bremen. It lies north of Bürgerpark. The Stadtwald also lies between Technologiepark Bremen and Bundesautobahn 27. Stadtwaldsee is commonly known as the Unisee. This is because of its proximity to Bremen University. The lake’s surface area is 28.2 ha. Its maximum depth is 16.5 m. The shore length measures 11882 m.

Pannlake is part of this larger network of green spaces that contribute to Bremen’s ecological health.

The lake and the nature reserve were created by sand extraction. This occurred during the development of the A 27 motorway. It also supported the construction of the university.

The northeastern shore features the Uni-Wildnis. This is a nature reserve. There is also a nude beach and HanseCamping Bremen. To the southeast lies a grassy recreational area. It has a sand beach open for swimming. Concerts and open-air events occur here sometimes.

The western end of the lake is used by windsurfers anglers and divers. A water-skiing facility was planned in 2005 and 2007. This caused a dispute. A citizens initiative opposed the Ministry for Interior and Sport.

In summer the water often develops algae buildup. The lake must occasionally be closed to swimmers.

Bremen offers a blend of urban development and natural spaces. Pannlake and the Stadtwaldsee area highlight this balance. The lake is accessible via bus line 28 of Bremer Straßenbahn AG. The bus stops are Wetterungsweg Campingplatz and Stadtwaldsee.

So next time you find yourself near Pannlake take a moment to appreciate its subtle beauty. Consider the important ecological role it plays in Bremen. It’s a reminder that even within a city nature finds a way to thrive.
