In 1848, a ship named Clifton sailed into the Tamaki River, carrying eighty families of fencibles. These families, hailing from Ireland and England, disembarked near present-day Panmure. They found themselves in a place the Māori called Mokoia, a site rich in history. Panmure, as it would become known, was initially favored by Felton Mathew as the new capital of New Zealand. However, fate had other plans, and Auckland, further west, became the chosen city. Panmure then became a fencible settlement, with soldiers contracted to protect the land in exchange for property. These soldiers were required to perform twelve days of military service annually and parade on Sundays in full military attire. They were only once called to action, in 1851, when a flotilla of waka carrying warriors approached Auckland. The Panmure fencibles were armed to guard the Tamaki River, but it was the Onehunga fencibles who ultimately joined the defense of Auckland. Panmure’s location near the narrowest part of the isthmus proved strategically important, particularly during the New Zealand Wars of the 1860s, when it became a bustling hub. The 1865 opening of the Panmure Bridge connected the Auckland isthmus to eastern farmland and the Howick settlement. Even after the arrival of the railway in 1908, Panmure continued to be a transport hub, with steamers stopping on their way to the Coromandel and Firth of Thames goldfields. Panmure thrived due to its position on the route between Auckland and the larger fencible settlement of Howick. People and goods travelled by ferry across the narrow point below the historic Mokoia Pā. Until the mid-20th century, Panmure remained a tranquil, pastoral borough, described as a small collection of farmlets surrounding a quiet village with a church, a post office, a few shops, and a well-known two-story hotel. Panmure Township eventually merged with Mount Wellington Borough in 1955. The rapid suburban growth following World War II, along with improved connections to Pakuranga, transformed Panmure into a significant commercial center. More recent developments include the Auckland-Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI), which significantly upgraded Panmure railway station, reducing travel time to Britomart station to seventeen minutes. The project also involved the construction of three new bridges and improved pedestrian and cycle paths. The Tamaki Transformation Programme, initiated in 2012, aims to revitalize the area over the next twenty-five years, with expected population growth and improvements to the quality of life for residents. Panmure, from its origins as a Māori settlement to a fencible village and now a bustling suburb, remains a testament to its rich history and its ongoing transformation.
