Who could imagine a statue as controversial as the Panenka Mária? This four-meter-high bronze statue of the Virgin Mary and child Jesus stands proudly on the southern wall of Buda Castle. The Panenka Mária statue isn’t your typical depiction of Mary and Jesus. The child Jesus hovers in front of his mother. This unusual portrayal represents the mystery and wonder of the immaculate conception. The sculptor, László Mátyássy, created a truly unique piece. A smaller, man-sized version of the Panenka Mária is displayed in the Castle Gallery. This allows visitors to admire the intricate details up close before seeing the monumental version on the castle wall. The Panenka Mária statue on Buda Castle is a relatively recent addition. It offers a modern take on a classic religious figure, prompting reflection on faith and artistry.
