One crisp morning in Mexico City, a small crowd gathered. They were not looking at a real panda, but at the Panda Statue. This unique artwork reminds us of a remarkable story. The Panda Statue symbolizes Xin Xin, the last giant panda in Latin America. She resided in the Chapultepec Zoo. Xin Xin was no ordinary panda. She was a native-born Mexican, a descendant of pandas gifted from China.

Chapultepec Zoo held a special distinction. It was one of two zoos globally housing pandas without direct Chinese governmental oversight. This arrangement stemmed from China’s “panda diplomacy” of the 1970s and 80s. During this time, pandas were gifted to various nations. Xin Xin’s grandparents, Pe Pe and Ying Ying, arrived in 1975. This era might be ending with Xin Xin. At 32, she is elderly, childless, and in menopause.

The future of pandas in Latin America is uncertain. Securing a new panda involves a hefty price tag. China now loans pandas for 10-15 years at $1 million annually. Mexico’s current administration seems unlikely to accept these terms. The Panda Statue serves as a reminder of this diplomatic tightrope. It symbolizes the unique history of panda conservation in Mexico.

Xin Xin lived a simple life. She enjoyed relaxing in hammocks, searching for bamboo, and indulging in her favorite treat: red apples. She represented a lineage of pandas born in Mexico. Her mother, Tohui, was the second panda born outside China and the first to survive infancy. Tohui’s birth in 1990 was a joyous surprise. The zoo staff discovered her far from the watchful eye of the 24-hour camera.

Mexico’s panda program achieved remarkable success. Eight pandas were born there, five surviving to adulthood. The Chapultepec Zoo became a center of panda knowledge. Scientists collected genetic material, including cryogenically preserved semen and ovarian tissue. This material offers hope for future panda conservation efforts, symbolized by the Panda Statue.

The Panda Statue also reminds us of the animals’ enduring appeal. A panda museum at the zoo displays photographs, footprints, and children’s drawings. It commemorates past pandas, like Shuan Shuan, whose birthday piñata remains on display. The Panda Statue stands as a tribute to these beloved creatures. It represents the delicate balance of international relations, conservation efforts, and the simple joys of watching a panda at play.
