“Non omnis moriar” or “I shall not wholly die”. That’s the powerful motto emblazoned on the National Museum of the Philippines. This reflects its enduring mission to safeguard the Philippines’ rich heritage.

The National Museum of the Philippines is not just one building. It is an umbrella organization. It oversees several national museums. These museums showcase ethnographic anthropological archaeological and visual arts collections. Think of it as the nation’s treasure chest protecting its most prized cultural possessions.

Established in 1901 the National Museum has a rich history. Its roots trace back to the Museo-Biblioteca de Filipinas founded in 1887 during the Spanish colonial era. This early museum-library was short-lived. It closed around 1900.

The American-supervised Philippine Commission established the Insular Museum of Ethnology Natural History and Commerce. It replaced the museum-library in 1901. The Insular Museum became the Philippine Museum. The organization underwent changes merging and reorganizing several times.

World War II brought devastation. The museum lost much of its collection during the Liberation of Manila in 1945. The Old Legislative Building and the Bureau of Science Building were destroyed. Yet the spirit of the museum endured. It was rebuilt and its role in cultural growth was recognized.

In 1966 President Ferdinand Marcos signed the Cultural Properties and Protection Act. This act underscored the museum’s importance. In 1991 President Cory Aquino declared October as “Museum and Galleries Month”. This celebration highlights the Philippines’ rich culture and national identity.

The National Museum Complex in Manila houses the central museums. These include the National Museum of Fine Arts the National Museum of Anthropology and the National Museum of Natural History. Each offers a unique window into the Philippines’ cultural and natural heritage.

The National Museum of Fine Arts showcases valuable artworks including Juan Luna’s iconic “Spoliarium”. The National Museum of Anthropology preserves the country’s anthropological and archaeological treasures. The National Museum of Natural History features the stunning “Tree of Life” and the skeleton of the Philippines’ largest crocodile.

Beyond Manila the National Museum operates regional and satellite museums. These extend the museum’s reach across the archipelago. They bring cultural and historical treasures closer to local communities.

In 2019 the agency’s name officially became the “National Museum of the Philippines”. In 2025 the museum extended its opening hours. It now welcomes visitors every day of the week.

The National Museum of the Philippines continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of a growing nation. It embraces its role as a guardian of culture and history. As you explore its halls remember its motto “Non omnis moriar”. The National Museum lives on preserving the Philippines’ legacy for generations to come.
