Has anyone ever heard of Diego Casero? This unassuming merchant built something extraordinary in 1788. Right here at the heart of El Palomar, you’ll find the Palomar de Caseros. It’s not just any dovecote. This remarkable circular structure, composed of three concentric levels, housed thousands of pigeons in its nearly 10,000 niches. Palomar de Caseros wasn’t merely a functional structure. It showcased Casero’s wealth and innovative spirit, a grand architectural statement in the vast landscape surrounding Buenos Aires. The pigeons themselves were a valuable commodity. Their squabs, considered a delicacy, were a sought-after addition to the local diet. The location of the Palomar de Caseros also played a pivotal role in Argentine history. On the eve of the Battle of Caseros in 1852, it served as a meeting point for Federal Army leaders. During the battle, it became a strategic stronghold for Juan Manuel de Rosas’s forces. They positioned ten artillery pieces around the Palomar de Caseros and its main house. The house itself, built in 1788 with twenty-four rooms and a corner watchtower, became a field hospital and unfortunately, a scene of tragedy. The very grounds where we stand witnessed this crucial battle, which marked the end of Rosas’s rule and paved the way for Argentina’s unification. Years later, in 1859, the Palomar de Caseros played host to the preliminary meetings that led to the Pact of San José de Flores. This pact was a significant step towards national reconciliation and solidified Argentina’s future as a united nation. Today, within the grounds of the National Military College, the Palomar de Caseros still stands, a testament to its rich and multifaceted past. Its circular walls have witnessed pivotal moments in Argentine history, echoing with the footsteps of soldiers and the murmurings of diplomats. The countless pigeons that have called it home add their own unique layer to its narrative. The Palomar de Caseros is a place where the past is tangible, and where the stories of battles, agreements, and everyday life intertwine within these weathered brick walls.
