Why did Palmers Green need a new library in the late 1930s? Palmers Green Library, a striking example of interwar architecture, sits proudly at the eastern end of Broomfield Road. It wasn’t always a standalone structure. Originally, this handsome building, completed between 1938 and 1940, served as an extension to the neighboring Southgate Town Hall. The Victorian town hall, built of red brick, needed more space, and the burgeoning community needed a new library. The project, a hefty £20,000 investment for the time, was jointly funded by the Borough and Middlesex County Council. Look closely, and you’ll see their coats of arms carved into the exterior, a testament to their shared contribution. Designed by the young architect J. T. W. Peat, Palmers Green Library showcases a modern style. Peat, at only 33, became the youngest Borough Engineer and Surveyor in Britain when he took on the project. The foundation stone, laid in October 1938, can still be seen, though time and weather have taken their toll. Remarkably, construction finished swiftly in September 1939, coinciding with Britain’s declaration of war against Germany. Palmers Green Library opened its doors in April 1940, only to be quickly requisitioned for the war effort. While bombs fell across the Borough, the library miraculously escaped unscathed. Interestingly, amid wartime restrictions, reading became a popular pastime. Reports show library borrowers almost doubled between 1940 and 1945. Fast forward to 2013, and the Southgate Town Hall site was sold for redevelopment. Palmers Green Library, however, was saved. The council invested £4.5 million in a major refurbishment. The original brickwork and Crittall windows were meticulously restored. Although the original wooden entrance doors are gone, the new automatic doors maintain the building’s character. While some might find the Broomfield Road facade bleak, the unusual footbridge leading to the entrance adds a touch of grandeur. The interior now boasts a modern design, yet the restored original ceiling and new skylights create a bright, inviting space. Palmers Green Library stands as a testament to community spirit and the enduring power of books, a treasured asset for generations to come.
