Question: Did you know that Palmbach is Karlsruhe’s highest residential area? This Waldensian town offers a unique glimpse into history. Palmbach sits on the southeastern edge of Karlsruhe. It was incorporated into the city in 1975.

Palmbach’s story begins with religious refugees. In 1701, 28 Waldensian families sought shelter here. They had been expelled from their homes in Piedmont, now part of Italy. Their Reformed faith was not tolerated. Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg granted them land in Grünwettersbach.

These families established the Waldensian colony of Palmbach in 1702. Initially, they named it La Balme. This was after their former hometown. The name Palmbach first appeared in records in 1725. That same year, they built their first small church. Some families moved on to Prussia, leaving 96 residents.

The Waldensians kept somewhat separate from their Grünwettersbach neighbors. However, they maintained connections with other Waldensian settlements. These included Untermutschelbach and Walldorf. In 1806, Palmbach became part of Baden. German replaced French as the official language in schools and churches.

Life in 19th-century Palmbach was challenging. Many residents supplemented their farming income with industrial work. Between 1830 and 1870, 84 residents emigrated to North America.

In 1972, Palmbach joined with Grünwettersbach. They formed the municipality of Wettersbach. This was to avoid being incorporated into Karlsruhe. But this effort only delayed the inevitable. In 1975, Palmbach became part of Karlsruhe. It regained its original name. Today, Palmbach has around 1,950 residents.

Palmbach offers several attractions. The Wettersbach Sculpture Park spans Palmbach and Grünwettersbach. Since 2014, the Baden School Museum Karlsruhe has been located in the former Waldensian school. Here, you can see the Palmbacher Märchenwelt. This is a fairytale scene by Hans Fischer-Schuppach. The Waldenserweg features the Waldensian monument Tor des Ankommens. This “Gate of Arrival” was created by artists Barbara Jäger and OMI Riesterer. It stands on Waldenserplatz. Along the Waldenserweg, 24 display boards tell the history of Palmbach. They highlight historical sites like the Waldensian Church. The Waldensian Church welcomes visitors daily for prayer and reflection.

Palmbach is well-connected. Several bus lines serve the district. These include lines 27, 47, 47A, and 158. There is also a night line NL3. This provides hourly service to Karlsruhe on weekends.

Palmbach’s story is one of faith. It is a story of resilience. It is a story of community. As you explore this unique district, remember its rich heritage. Consider the Waldensians. They sought a place to call home. They shaped Palmbach into the charming village it is today.
